Spring Fashion: Start collecting items now

It’s always exciting to look ahead to the next fashion season. In winter, all the thick layers can start to get pretty dull, with items like knitwear quickly becoming boring. That’s why, whilst we’re all still very much stuck in the winter weather, it’s always nice to think about what we’ll be wearing once it starts to warm up and the sun makes an appearance. To help get you fashion ready for the spring season, here is a guide to the key items you should start buying now.

1970s

It’s already started to hit our fashion radars and the 70s trend is only going to get bigger in spring 2011. Now is the time to buy flowing below the knee skirts, woven brown belts and headscarves. If you’re not sure about fully embracing the 1970s trend, dip your toe in the water with some 70s accessories. Oversized sunglasses are always chic and glamorous and you can never go wrong with a gorgeous wide brimmed hat.

Punk

Thanks to Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring collection, come March fashion is going punk. Crack out the black eyeliner and dark eye shadow and give your self some seriously smoky eyes with attitude. Start buying black jackets with pointed and hard tailoring so that they look structured and anything but soft. Don’t be afraid to go for leather and rather than sticking to just black, invest in some red leather pieces such as a red leather jacket or a pair of red leather shorts. As with any punk look, black reigns supreme, so start looking out for loose knit black jumpers, black biker jackets and skinny black scarves.

Animal print

After last season you may be sick of seeing leopard print, but the animal print trend is not going away. Designers have branched out from leopard and embraced snake skin, zebra print and pony print. There’s no limit to what you can find in animal print this season so be adventurous. An animal print bag seems like a must as you’ll be able to use it to update lots of different looks. The bigger the animal print the better, so make a real statement with a long animal print dress or an animal print jacket.

Eastern influences

The influence of the east can be seen across the catwalks this season, from patterns to shaping. Long, flowing silk tunics are a gorgeous and elegant look to invest in. Go for one with an oriental flower or tree pattern. Long loose trousers are also key to this look and create a soft and flowing style. Wrap around kimono style jackets are also hot this season. Go for one in black with a red trim for an edgy twist on the oriental look.

Colour blockingBright bold colours are going to be huge this spring. Start investing in bright colour pieces and work them into your existing wardrobe. If you dare, go for a colour clash and create a real statement with bright jarring colours.
